Hey! Say! JUMP - BAILA June 2021 (English Translation)
The Simple Rules of Happiness
Hey! Say! JUMP continue to evolve as all of the members are around their 30s. The 8 members reveal their happy secrets to achieving the best life possible which is full of happiness.
Yamada Ryosuke

There's no need to compare yourself to anyone else, it's more important to hone your originality!
I'm very happy we are able to appear as a group in this commemorative issue for BAILA's 20th anniversary, and I can only be grateful. Hey! Say! JUMP will be celebrating our 15th anniversary next year, and I know firsthand how hard it is to keep doing this one thing at a time. When I look back on it, the months go by so fast! Even so, there were times when it was very difficult, and I can't really sum it up in a few words. We experienced our CD debut as teenagers, spent our adolescence and rebellion together, and sometimes clashed with each other, but as we grew up, we learned each of our roles in the group, and now that we are here, I am deeply moved.
I don't have any hobbies other than gaming, and although this may sound naive, I feel happiest when I'm working. If I wasn't doing this job, I'd be a hopeless person (laughs). When I feel uncertain because I am taking my work seriously, I tell someone else how I feel. I'm the type of person who thinks it's better to do something and regret it than to do nothing and regret it, no matter what the outcome is. As long as there are people who accept me, I want to stick to my beliefs. It's my life, and I don't wanna change my principals. I've always been stubborn, and I'm aware that's troublesome (laughs). If there was another person like me in the same group, it would be tough! But as I've grown older, I've learned to accept other people's opinions, though I'll never change my mind about what I believe is right (laughs). For better or worse, that's my idea of justice.

I don't want to lie to myself, and I want to continue to protect my loved ones and where I belong.
I turned 27 last November, and I suddenly thought about my life going forward as Chinen Yuri, rather than as an idol. I asked myself, "Why am I doing this job?" and the answer was, "Because there is something there I enjoy, and entertainment I want to do", and I was deeply convinced that this was why I'm in this position. I'm the type of person who feels happy to present what I find interesting as a group. I like music and dancing, but dancing by myself is not fun. I don't like to dance alone (laughs).
I think it's important for entertainment to be something that you like and enjoy. I'm more aware than before that in order to feel that what I'm working so hard on is "good work", I need to create an environment where I can feel that way myself. I used to be the kind of person who would forget and skip my own farewell party (laughs). But over the past ten years that I've spent with the members, I think I've become able to cherish the people I love. I've become able to communicate in my own way, through words and behaviour, the importance of the people I want by my side and the people I want to see. In the end, that's not for the sake of others, but for myself, and it's something I'm doing to protect this precious environment. I believe my role among the members is to provide mental care. It's because of this group that I can spend time without worrying and enjoy the process of creating things. We don't need to show that we get along, I'd just like to continue our relationship naturally.
Nakajima Yuto

Having a group of friends to work with keeps you motivated and allows you to achieve results.
People who are able to make a decision in one-go without any pressure are undeniably cool! But I'm not very handy, and I'm also nervous. I'm also a bit of a perfectionist, so I sometimes find it draining to live a life that is so serious...... But when I changed my way of thinking and thought that I don't have to get 100% all the time, I feel that my approach to life became a little better. Of course, no matter what I do, I always give it my all. But even if the result is not 100% like what I wanted, I have changed and now appreciate 70% of my effort. In the past, I would dwell on the 30% that I couldn't do and just feel down. I still have my moments of negativity, but I feel much better now.
It is very important to "deceive yourself" in a good way. It's a waste of time to be so strict (on yourself) that you get burnt out and don't have enough time to absorb something! Spending time with the members made me realise how serious and difficult I am, and it was great that I was able to change little by little. We are a large group with many different types of people, and each of us has many good points. That's why I've come to think that it's not good to live in denial about the things I've worked hard on. Even now, I still long for the personality of someone who, when being praised, humbly replies, "That's not true!" while achieving brilliant results (laughs). There is no such thing as a perfect person, so I would like to cherish the small happiness of each day and keep my motivation high.

Even if you can't make something happen right now, if you believe in yourself, the day will come when it will come true.
The turning point for me was probably when I was about 18 or 19 years old and I tried to work out the organisation of JUMP concerts by myself. It gave me a chance to come up with my own ideas, learn what I could and couldn't make a reality, and to learn the mechanics of staging. In fact, the type of production I wanted to do at the time but couldn't finally became a reality last year after 10 years! That made me very happy, and I realised that "what you can imagine is definitely possible!" That's why, for example, if I'm told during a meeting, "I don't think that's a good idea," I'll feel down, but it won't end up with me being like, "I'm angry, I was denied... boo-hoo" (laughs). It's important and interesting to spend time thinking about why it didn't work, and analysing the reasons. There is also timing, and I believe in keeping ideas that I think are good instead of throwing them away.
The fact that it sometimes takes time for things to bear fruit is something that I've felt from my solo camping project "Atsumare! Yaotome no Mori" on "Hirunandesu!" I became interested in camping as a teenager because of the influence of Fujioka Hiroshi-san, and then I started camping when I was about 23 years old. Then, last year I happened to tell the staff of the TV program about it, and it became a project and a big topic of conversation. It gives me a special sense of fulfillment to know that something that was only a hobby of mine has turned into a job, and that people of all ages and genders enjoy it. I have a lot of things stored up that I want to accomplish, and I believe I can make them happen someday, so I can only look forward to the future for myself and the group!
Yabu Kota

If us members don't have a heart-to-heart relationship with each other, we're not a "team", we're just a "herd".
We are a large group, but it's not like we consciously built up our relationship of trust. There were turning points at every important moment, and we overcame them together, and our confidence became a bond. I believe that such small accumulations has led to an absolute relationship of trust. Now we have a relationship where we can gently reach out to each other when a member is feeling down, and naturally follow each other. I want to be on the side of the members no matter how much the world and people around them become their enemies, and it is reassuring to know that there are many people who are on our side. We all share a common destiny, we are not a single person. I'm very aware that I need to do my best to give back to the group.
Six years from now, we'll be celebrating our 20th anniversary, and in a good way, I hope I'll still have the same relationship with the members as I do now. I'm the oldest, and I'm 31 now. I'll be 37 when we celebrate our 20th anniversary, so maybe I'm reaching a crossroads (in life). I'm sure that BAILA readers will be thinking about career advancement and major changes in their environment when they reach their 30s. There is no shortage of worries when you think about the future, but I think it is necessary to accept various changes. Even as a group, each member's way of thinking has been different since our debut, and it will continue to change. I hope that we can move forward together while keeping a close eye on what each of us is aiming for and what kind of future we envision for ourselves.

Let's not take a single thing for granted, and live happily with the everyday things we take for granted.
I've been with the members since I was a child, so when people ask me about our relationship, I can only say that I feel we are close enough to transcend everything. We've spent more time together than a family does, so for better or worse, we have no shame (laughs). Over the years, each of us has found what we are good at while moving forward, and we have watched those activities closely and worked hard to improve them together. I have never once been jealous of any of the members, and I have always treated them with a calm mind. With age and experience, my emotional strength has been developed to a certain extent, but at the time of our debut, there were many times when I felt alone and troubled... Perhaps it was because of those painful experiences that I became more patient and learned the importance of perseverance. Even if you can't come to a conclusion right away, "if you give up, you lose"! (T/N: This phrase that Inoo uses 'Kusattara make!' is a HKT48 song, but I don’t know if this is a reference to that). The more you build up your career, the more you can't give up in the middle. Besides, in a job like ours where you have to appear in front of people, interest is of course important, but in the end, I think it all comes down to humanity. This is only possible when there are people who think, "I want to work with this person again!" It's the same for any job, but without trust, you can't ask someone to do a job, and it's impossible to establish something together. That's why my motto towards my work is to never lie to myself, no matter what. This is the one thing that I will never give up no matter what, and I don't want to change it in the future. I want to continue to challenge myself in various ways without fear of failure.
Takaki Yuya

The way to get a happy life is not to hold onto poison and anger!
Frustration can have a negative impact on you and the people around you. I myself don't get stressed very often, but when I do, I try to relieve it by driving, which I love. I don't have a goal to go anywhere, I just drive safely on the highway (laughs). I've always loved cars, and when I'm driving, I can only concentrate on that, which naturally refreshes my mind.
I think I'm good at feeling small happiness. There are many unpleasant things in life, but when I feel "happy", I honestly express it in words. Even when you are playing with your friends, you can tell them that, "I'm happy now!" and "It's so relaxing to be with you", because I don't want to take that wonderful time for granted.
One of the problems I've been having since becoming 30 is that my skin gets dry (laughs). I used to be able to leave my skin alone after bathing without putting anything on, but lately my skin has been flaking and I need to moisturise after bathing! It hasn't become a habit of mine yet, and it's a bit of a tedious process, but I'm going to keep at it. I can get carried away when I experience things I like, like cars and motorcycles, but I hope I can change my indifference to things I'm not interested in from now on. I admire cool guys, but I'm not that kind of guy (laughs). I think it's important to express yourself honestly, so it would be nice if I can become a man who can express his "self" well.
I want to increase my experience and knowledge in my 30s, after pushing myself in my 20s.
In terms of age amongst the group, I'm right in the middle. I've been given a lot of freedom to do what I want while being pampered by the (people) older and the (people) younger than me. When we first formed, I thought that because I was in the middle, I had to play the role of connecting the older (people) and younger (people), but I soon realised that this was not necessary. However, when everyone's concentration starts to fade on set, I try to shout louder to liven things up. I'm not a mood-maker, but I don't like it when the atmosphere is tense.
One thing that hasn't changed since our debut is that I try to tell the members everything about myself. I tell them, "I've been to this place" or that "I've seen an interesting movie". In the dressing room, I go around doing interviews with everyone to report what's going on (laughs). I think it's important to share information in order to build a relationship of trust. Even when the members are having some private time, my face will come to their mind and they will contact me. It may seem like a casual thing, but I think it's a happy thing. It's essential for me to spend time with the members where I can have these conversations.
Recently, I sometimes feel like I want to have "the strength to not get upset". I get nervous especially when I speak in front of people. Even if I have my notes with me, I tend to go off on tangents, so I need to train myself to convey my thoughts to others in a good and easy-to-understand way. In terms of age, the number of (younger) juniors are starting to increase, and I'm in a position where I have to teach them a lot of things, but we have to work together in friendly competition and I also have to develop myself so that I can get one step closer to being the ideal man.
Nakajima Yuto x Inoo Kei

I feel happiest when I'm talking to Yuto about movies and other shared topics. Especially when there are times when Yuto imitates a scene from a movie, which makes me remember the scene vividly and makes the conversation more exciting. I hope I can continue to cherish the time we spend having fun conversations!
From Kei
When I make a statement that only Inoo-chan gets, and when he pinpoints it and laughs, I can only be happy! I mean this in a good way, but Inoo-chan has a bit of a slanted view on things and he sometimes doesn't see the obvious as the obvious. He doesn't overlook the trivial things, and he can think in difficult ways, so the moments when he can make me laugh without going through the motions are extremely pleasing.
From Yuto

I went to the same high school as Chi, and we spent the most time together out of the group, which was almost every day when we were about 20 years old. He knows me better than my own family, so I've received a lot of happiness from him, from small to big! It's so natural for me to have him next to me now, he's like my little brother even though he's my classmate, and his very presence is healing for me.
From Ryosuke
Ryosuke is the type of person who is very clear about what he wants to do. I'm not really as particular [as him], so we can be together without stress. When he's not in a good mood, I think he's good at knowing whether to should get involved or just leave it be alone (laughs). The surprise party that Ryosuke held for me on my 21st birthday, when he gathered all of my seniors and friends, is a happy memory that still remains in my heart.
From Chinen
Yaotome Hikaru x Arioka Daiki

When I was appearing in the drama "Kinpachi Sensei", I was going through adolescence (laughs). I wasn't at the point of going off the rails, but there were days where I didn’t wanna go home, so I was allowed to stay at Dai-chan's house. When I think about it now, I'm grateful to Dai-chan and his family for accepting a member being at their home every day as normal. I'll be happy if we can continue doing our no-fail jokes between us, as we've always been on the same wavelength.
From Hikaru
Hika and I have spent a lot of time together since our Jr. days, and we have many happy stories. When he came to play at my parents' house, I remember that he suddenly started writing his own signature on the closet door and I was surprised (laughs). He wrote it with a highlighter orange pen, I wonder if he remembers? I thought, "Are you doing that in someone's house?" but we became really close from that point on.
From Daiki

There are many moments when I feel fate with Takaki, such as when we are at the same workplace, or we meet by chance in the sauna of a public bath after we leave (work for the day). I remember the two of us secretly making eye contact with each other like "Ah! Yabu-kun!" "Takaki!" (laughs). Takaki may look cool, but during rehearsals for live performances, he takes notes on his mobile phone about where he's standing, and there are so many cute parts to him that I can't take my eyes off him.
From Kota
I feel happy the moment I see Yabu-kun talking seriously about soccer. Foreign matches are often played in the middle of the night, and there can be several games going on at the same time. So we can check out many games, when we come across Yabu-kun watching a soccer game in his dressing room, he explains the games to us in an easy-to-understand way, and he has a very lively expression on his face.

He doesn't overlook the trivial things, and he can think in difficult ways, so the moments when he can make me laugh without going through the motions are extremely pleasing.

Chinen Yuri x Yamada Ryosuke

Yabu Kota x Takaki Yuya
