Hey! Say! JUMP - Wink-up April 2020 (English Translation)
We shot the members chatting and smiling kindly!
For this interview, each duo was split up and asked to talk about each other's "kindness"!
Yaotome Hikaru x Yabu Kota

Yaotome: Yabu-kun is really nice, isn't he? If people ask me, I can say that with confidence.
Yabu: I'm the type of person who goes out of my way to be nice to people who try to be nice to me.
Yaotome: Yeah. I feel that. That's why I'm trying to be nice to Yabu.
Yabu: People are like that, aren't they? You also sent me a happy birthday message on my birthday.
Yaotome: Yeah! But when we were younger, around when the word "Yabuhika" was born, we didn't stay in contact much because of being awkward.
Yabu: Right! I was like, "Shut up! I get it already!" (laughs). We were at that age.
Yaotome: I was like, "Don't give us such a combination name as you please. Call us Yabu-kun and Hikaru-kun!" We were so young! (laughs)
Yabu: Now I don't think about it anymore. Even when we're instructed to put our cheeks together on set, we can do it without a care in the world (laughs). But I do have one complaint about the Hikaru of the past!
Yaotome: Eh, did I do something?
Yabu: Several years ago on April Fool's Day, you called me on the phone and told me an outrageous lie!
Yaotome: ... what was it again?
Yabu: It was something like... I wonder if I should continue doing this job. I was in a panic about what to do. In order to calm myself down, I asked, "First of all, please explain your current situation", and I wrote it down on a note word by word.
Yaotome: Really? I don’t remember (laughs).
Yabu: As I stared at the note, I was troubled, and then Hikaru started to giggle and asked, "Do you know what day it is today?". The level of the lie was quite unbelievable. Really~ Hikaru's conduct at the time was not kind at all (laughs)
Yaotome: Yabu, if I may say this, don't let yourself get deceived by people (laughs)
Yabu: And I was pretty tired after rehearsing for my butai. You really did that to me when I was in a state like, "Oh, I'm so tired! I've got to turn on the humidifier for tomorrow's rehearsal!"
Yaotome: And even though you were in such a state and after I told you it was a lie, you didn't get angry at all.
Yabu: I wasn't angry. Rather than being angry, I felt relieved. I was relieved because I could continue to work with Hikaru like before.
Yaotome: Well, I told that lie because it was Yabu too. If it was Yamada, he'd probably explode (laughs).
Yabu: I know what you mean! When there's only so many members, we all react in different ways. I'm thinking of getting even on April Fool's Day in a few years, so be prepared!
Yaotome: Uwa, in a few years... I'll try not to get angry because of how you handled it before (laughs). Something I did to show my kindness to Yabu was when I recently sent him the birthday message I was talking about earlier, because if I sent it at exactly midnight, other people would've sent messages too, and it would have made a lot of noise and distracted him, so I waited a little while before I sent it. But I did the countdown to midnight by myself!
Yabu: (Happily) Seriously?
Yaotome: Yeah, I thought to myself, '3, 2, 1, happy birthday!'
Yabu: Wait a minute... (checks his mobile phone) I got a message from Hikaru at 0:22am! He said, "Congratulations on being 30 years old." (T/N: This is written as 30ちゃい、not 30さい). I replied, "Let's go out for dinner soon," and he replied, "You're buying!" (laughs).
Yaotome: I'm joking, I'm joking! It's your birthday, so I'm sending that! By the way, who was the first person to send you a message?
Yabu: Um... Yamamoto Ryota, he sent it right at midnight! After him was Tsuka-chan (Tsukada Ryoichi) and Micchi (Miyata Toshiya) at 12:01 am.
Yaotome: Eh~ is that so. Seriously, let's go for dinner soon.
Yabu: Right! There's a healthy Chinese restaurant. How about there?
Yaotome: I was just about to say that I wanted to eat Chinese food too! Sounds nice!
Yabu: Chinese food has an image of being greasy, but their food is healthy and additive-free.
Yaotome: Okay~ you're buying (laughs).
Yabu: That's fine. I'll treat you.
Yaotome: I was lying. You're so nice, Yabu.
Yabu: After our concert in Nagoya, I was having dinner with my friend and his wife and Chinen, and Hikaru turned up later. At that time, Hikaru treated us all to dinner! I jokingly said, "Well, Hikaru, thanks for the food today", and he said, "Yeah, no problem~". I thought he was gonna retort with, "Come on, I'm Yabu's friend!"
Yaotome: They were people I'd met before. And on that day, they were announcing that they were having a baby, so it was a very special occasion. It was in the sense of a celebration.
Yabu: You were so cool back then, Hikaru! But we really don't fight or argue at all these days.
Yaotome: That's right. Yabu and I have never had any serious fights in the past, have we? Whenever I had a fight with a kid from the same unit, Yabu would intervene and say, 'Okay, okay, okay'."
Yabu: How nostalgic~ Peaceful Yabuhika for many years to come, that's good, isn’t it?
Nakajima Yuto x Inoo Kei

Nakajima: I don't know why Inoo-chan listens to me so well.
Inoo: The stories that Yuto talks about are interesting.
Nakajima: I'm someone who wants to go in a different direction to the ordinary, and that's what Inoo-chan seems to like.
Inoo: Right. That's why I'm the only one who laughs sometimes (laughs). Dai-chan is good at making it seem he's listening, but he actually doesn't listen.
Nakajima: I feel like I understand (laughs).
Inoo: He goes, "Inoo-chan, that thing you did the other day was amazing! Oh, that wasn't Inoo-chan" (laughs). Dai-chan is so random. So I'll tell you about Yuto. Can I say something that's not nice?
Nakajima: Oh, what is it?
Inoo: You've stated that you like Star Wars and you've done some work related to Star Wars. You went all the way to Los Angeles.
Nakajima: Yes, thanks to you.
Inoo: Did you notice it was thanks to me? When Yuto was still in primary school, I gave him a pretty nice Darth Vader mask as a birthday present.
Nakajima: Yes, you did give it to me.
Inoo: Yuto had a lot of fun with that mask. He used to wear it and have sword fights with his brother. I heard a lot of stories about it. To be clear, I think I'm the one who created the foundations for Yuto’s love for "Star Wars". He's been doing a lot of interviews and things now, and I think he's had plenty of chances to talk about, "How did I get into Star Wars?" ...... but he never mentions me at all! (laughs).
Nakajima: Hahaha! Indeed.
Inoo: If I may say so myself, that's a pretty good story. Maybe I could've gone with you to L.A!
Nakajima: I hate to say this but that mask... I've already got rid of it.
Inoo: It's okay if you got rid of it, but the story still remains.
Nakajima: Maybe when I got rid of the mask, I got rid of the memories as well!
Inoo: Hey! Don't get rid of the memories! (laughs).
Nakajima: Right... Inoo-chan has been reading every single article that's about me and "Star Wars".
Inoo: Yeah, with eyes like saucers...
Nakajima: If I ever get a job with Star Wars again, I'll make sure I'll talk about Inoo-chan's story!
Inoo: While I'm asking something of him, I'm also doing awful things to Yuto.
Nakajima: Huh, did something happen?
Inoo: When Yuto said he wanted to go see the latest Star Wars movie...
Nakajima: That was awful, Inoo-chan!
Inoo: Hahaha!
Nakajima: I'll say it too. If you can share so many memories about me, what about the story where you said you'd see Star Wars with me? I saw the premiere in LA, but it didn't have subtitles so I was really looking forward to seeing it with subtitles when I got back to Japan. It was released around JUMP's Nagoya concert. I thought I'd see it in the morning of our second day in Nagoya. It's lonely if I went by myself, so I thought I'd at least go with someone who likes Star Wars. So I thought I'd go with Inoo-chan. So I asked him, "Would you like to see Star Wars tomorrow morning?"
Inoo: I responded with a positive vibe like, "Oh, I'll think about it."
Nakajima: I was so excited like "Yes~", then his manager just said, "Oh, Inoo-san can't come tomorrow."
Inoo: I'm pretty awful if I say decline through my manager and don't say it myself (laughs).
Nakajima: You have no love! (laughs) Well, I guess it's true that it's difficult early in the morning...
Inoo: Yeah. I was worried that I couldn't absorb Star Wars first thing in the morning.
Nakajima: I see. You saw it another day, right?
Inoo: I did! I did! It's still a film to linger over. In the end, that day, Yuto...
Nakajima: I saw it with my manager who said he'd "never seen Star Wars" (laughs).
Inoo: Ahaha! It must've been gibberish to your manager.
Nakajima: That's true. It's a world like, "What is the Force?", "What is a Jedi?" If you're a fan, you'd be like, 'This scene is the best!" and you're amazed.
Inoo: He can't even talk about it afterwards, like, "That was such and such" (laughs). I feel real pity for the manager.
Nakajima: But he was looking out for me and said, "But it was a lot of fun! If you're a boy, you’ll like it. I enjoyed it too!"
Inoo: How nice~ To sum up today's talk, I'd say the kindest person is the manager who went along to the film (laughs).
Yamada Ryosuke x Chinen Yuri

Yamada: The staff tell me I "pamper Chinen" But is that the case?
Chinen: Ehh, I wonder... I don't know if he's being nice to me or not, since the way Ryosuke is now is so normal.
Yamada: We wouldn't know ourselves because this is the stance we find ourselves in. Outside of my family, Chinen probably spends more time with me than anyone else.
Chinen: Right. The kindness I show to Ryosuke is... if he's a bit blunt, I'll think, "Maybe he's not in a good mood today," and leave him alone. I wouldn't ask something risky like, "What's wrong?" Because as you can see from looking at him, he's in a bad mood.
Yamada: Chinen is that type of person. He won't talk to me. I'm easy to understand when I'm like that, right?
Chinen: Yes, you are!
Yamada: I'm the kind of person who is open and doesn't hide such things in front of the members (laughs). Of course, when I'm in public, I'm a professional and do things properly.
Chinen: Aren't you in a mellow phase these days? After all, I can see how hard it is watching from the side when you're in a busy period with work.
Yamada: Yeah, I'm pretty mellow at the moment. I eat what I want as much as I want... that's how I live (laughs).
Chinen: I'm not harsh at all, am I?
Yamada: I've never seen it once! It's just that there's a subtle difference in your mood, like, "Oh, you must've been offended by what I just said? I can understand that. Also, I think Chinen really knows how to handle me. Especially when we're on variety shows, he'll sometimes get me to lead the topic. He gives me a gentle pass (laughs).
Chinen: Recently, Ryosuke's variety skills have improved. I know that if I get Ryosuke to lead the topic here, it will definitely go in an interesting direction. The path he's taking is shining brightly... I can tell that much (laughs).
Yamada: I guess I'm like that (laughs). Chinen is not someone who takes, but passes.
Chinen: I don't have instantaneous power, so when a ball rolls in front of me, I gently pass it to someone else (laughs). From my point of view, Ryosuke's kindness makes me feel that he's looking out for me in many ways. He cares about things like my work.
Yamada: Oh, is that so?
Chinen: He often say, "This work is Chinen-like. I want Chinen to do it." He also gives me a lot of advice like, "You should do your hair this way."
Yamada: That's true, I might say that. I don't say anything like that to people I'm not interested in.
Chinen: Right? That's why I think Ryosuke is being kind to me. If you were to produce something for me completely, what would you have me do?
Yamada: I'd like to make a movie.
Chinen: Oh, I see. What kind of movie?
Yamada: I really, really liked the movie "Sakamichi no Apollon" that Chinen was in. I saw he could do this kind of thing. If anything, I'd say I just thought he was uncomfortable with acting things. But there was a Chinen there that I didn't know. I was so surprised.
Chinen: ...as long as I'm not the lead.
Yamada: I knew Chinen would say that (laughs). Right, maybe second or third. But I'd like him to play a role that would have a big impact on people's memories after watching it. He's very athletic, so maybe a role as an hit man might be good.
Chinen: Sounds good~ I want to try something like that!
Yamada: Right, right? Chinen's image tends to be "cute", so if he played a cold villian, it would be more frightening for the audience.
Chinen: Like killing people while smiling? But if it's possible at all, I don't want to get my hands dirty. Alright, I would control and move people.
Yamada: ...See, I'm already scared (laughs). Yes, that's also nice to see, Chinen using his minions to do bad things. But his appearance on the outside is just the usual Chinen-like image. I really want to shoot it! I'm confident that I can make it a good film! I really hope it happens someday. Chinen, you're going to do a butai, right?
Chinen: Oh, I knew that topic would come up!
Yamada: Hmm, what's the matter?
Chinen: It's my first time doing a butai like this, so I'm too anxious, and when the topic comes up, my excitement goes down.
Yamada: That's so Chinen-like (laughs). I'm sure you'll get more interviews when the performances come closer.
Chinen: What should I do, I'm going to be on stage by myself, away from JUMP.
Yamada: I told you don't worry! I'm doing movies and dramas as well. Don't worry! I'll see your butai on the first day, the middle day, and the final day to make sure you don’t feel lonely... as long as I can!
(Editor: Yamada does "pamper Chinen" after all.)
Chinen: ... Is that so? I just haven't noticed?
Yamada: It's okay! It's okay! This is the stance of me and Chinen. I'm sure we'll always be like this.
Takaki Yuya x Arioka Daiki

Arioka: Today's theme is "kindness". Takaki is kind.
Takaki: Both of us are one or two of the kindest pairs in JUMP.
Arioka: That's right. Plus, some of the most manly members!... which I say so myself (laughs). What I remember is from when I was a junior. When I lost my wallet, Takaki bought me a new one. Isn't that really nice of him? Normally, a kid wouldn't do something so forthright like that, right?
Takaki: I remember that very well (laughs).
Arioka: I remember it well. The place where I lost it was a game arcade in Shinbashi. When we were both going home, I realised my wallet was missing. While I was fussing around and saying "It's not here!", Takaki kindly lent me some money and said, "Here, take this and go home." I still haven't paid him back yet (laughs).
Takaki: If we're talking about things like that, I've been taken care of by Arioka-kun a lot. Just recently, he bought me a phone case.
Arioka: I was casually looking at phone cases online, and Chinen took a peek and said, "Wow, buy me a cute one!" And I said, "No problem," and bought it for him.
Takaki: That's what's so great about you.
Arioka: It's impossible to buy for everyone. So I went to place the order, and Takaki-kun came and said, "That's nice, buy one for me too." And in the end, I bought one for both of them.
Takaki: Arioka-kun is very generous in that way. He's vulnerable to requests from the members.
Arioka: It depends on the thing [they ask me for]!. And also, the timing.
Takaki: I've come to learn when that timing is. I think "I'll go now!" (laughs).
Arioka: Hikaru-kun is the one who still doesn't know the timing (laughs). He's the kind of person who, after you've said, "That's it!", he'll say, "I'm in..." and then join in. And he's the same when it comes to timing of food deliveries too. I'll be like, "Is everyone okay now? I'll order it then." And then Hikaru-kun is late and says, "I think I'll put an order in too..." I'm always saying, "Ah~ I just put in an order!"
Takaki: That's right! So, on the other hand, is there any part of me that's "not nice"?
Arioka: I don't mean that you're not kind, but I think it's interesting to watch you sometimes give the new managers "a bit of a "stern" look.
Takaki: Ahahahaha! I do! When they make a mistake, I think it's better to teach them something~
Arioka: Of course! Takaki is basically a kind person who is willing to talk to you. But every once in a while, he shows a glimpse of, "I'm not always a nice guy, either" (laughs). But by doing that, the newcomers can learn the job properly. (laughs). I think that's true kindness, the way he doesn’t pretend not to see it. And soon, you'll be right back to being nice to them as usual.
Takaki: Yeah, I'm aware I do that.
Arioka: Also when we're doing magazines, Takaki makes fun of the writers by saying something like he wants to finish the interview quickly, but in reality he drags it out for a long time (laughs). What he says and what he does are two different things.
Takaki: I do that too~ I'm a perversive person. But I only do that with writers who have known me for a long time and are used to it. They know I'm joking. I've been trying to think of some ways to lightly diss Arioka-kun, but I can't think of a single thing (laughs). He's never in a bad mood and never on edge.
Arioka: Really? In his discussion, Inoo-chan said that I'm so random (laughs). After a lot of talking, he said, "Oh, that wasn't Inoo-chan" (laughs).
Takaki: Oh, I feel like I've seen you like that before (laughs). But I'm often helped by Arioka-kun's talks a lot. When we're all talking, and I join in later, sometimes I feel like "Ah~ I can't join in", you know? In those cases, Arioka-kun would say, "We're talking about this right now, but didn't Takaki have something like that happen to him before?" He would invite me to talk about it. He really helps me a lot.
Arioka: ...I'm a really nice guy. I wonder, is it really acceptable to have a conversation where I get praised all the time?
Takaki: Isn't it nice once in a while?
Arioka: Well, I'll praise you back too. There was a lot of small rubbish on the table that Hikaru-kun probably left behind. You pick them up as you talks, put them in a tissue, and finally throw them away in the rubbish bin.
Takaki: Wow, you're watching me very closely.
Arioka: How about it, everyone! Are there men around you who are so accomplished? What I can't show you in videos, I've tried to give you in a live report. So this was a conversation between two gentle, manly, and impeccable men (laughs)!
For this interview, each duo was split up and asked to talk about each other's "kindness"!
Yaotome Hikaru x Yabu Kota

Yaotome: Yabu-kun is really nice, isn't he? If people ask me, I can say that with confidence.
